Anhydropenicillin V is transformed by Aspergillus niger, Penicillum chrysogenum, and other fungi into the thiopeptide, phenoxyacetylthioglycyl-(±)-valine (IIIa); the simultaneous formation of trace amounts of penicillin V is probably due to a spontaneous rather than an enzyme-catalysed rearrangement.
