  Fillings and cavities: Three novel pseudo-octahedral metal-organic frameworks, 1-3, consisting of macrometallacyclic noninterpenetrating meso networks and exhibiting weak antiferromagnetic interactions, have been constructed from CuII centers and structurally flexible R,S-bis(sulfinyl) ligands. Varying the chain length of ligands is found to control the cavity sizes of the networks.

  A series of novel mixed ligand complexes of yttrium and lanthanide(III) ions with bis(phenylsulphinyl)propane and bipyridyl have been synthesized. The complexes were assigned the formula [Ln(bphsp)(3)(bipy) (ClO4)](ClO4)(2) (bphsp = bis(phenylsulphinyl)propane; bipy = bipyridyl; Ln = La, Pr, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Er, Yb, Y) and [Nd(bphsp)(3)(bipy)(ClO4)](ClO4)(2) . 2H(2)O on the basis of analytical, conductance and spectral (IR, electronic) and magnetic data. In all cases, the lanthanide ion bonds to the sulphoxide moiety via the oxygen atoms and to the bipy via the nitrogen atom. The coordination number of the complexes may be nine. The spectral strength for emission spectrum (D-5(0) --> F-7(2)) of Eu(bphsp)(3)(bipy)(ClO4)(3) was increased by the coordination of bipy.

  The mixed-ligand complexes of lanthanide perchlorate with 1,3-bis-(phenylsulphinyl)propane (bphsp) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductance, thermal analysis, magnetic and spectral (IR, UV-vis XPS) data. The complexes have the general formula [La(bphsp)(3)(phen) (ClO4)](ClO4)(2) and [Ln(bphsp)(2.5)(phen)(ClO4)](CO4)(2) . nH(2)O (where Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Ho, Er, Yb and Y, n = 0-2).

  The synthesis and characterization of lanthanide complexes with bis(phenylsulphinyl)propane (L) are reported. Elemental analyses, molar conductivities, magnetic and spectral (visible, IR) measurements have been used to characterize the complexes. The IR spectral data show that the ligand (L) behaves as a bidentate ligand and coordination is through the oxygen of the sulphoxide moieties.
