A silver halide photographic material is disclosed, which comprises at least one silver halide emulsion layer on a support, at least one of the emulson layer and other layers contains at least one hydrazine derivative and at least one of these layers contains at least one compound having both a silver halide adsorbing group and an acid group represented by the general formula (I): C-L-D (I) wherein C represents a group that enhances adsorption to silver halide, D represents an acid group, and L represents a divalent linking group, and possessing substantially no absorption maximum in the visible region. A method for forming superhigh contrast negative images is also disclosed, comprising imagewise exposing this silver halide photographic material, followed by developing with a developing solution containing sulfite ions in an amount of about 0.15 mol or more per liter and having a pH of about 10.5 to about 12.3.
