    A process for producing an aromatic polyester having an increased degree of polymerization. The process comprises reacting a hydroxyl-terminated, substantially linear, fiber-forming aromatic polyester having an aromatic dicarboxylic acid as a main acid component at an elevated temperature with a bi-cyclic imino ester compound of formula (I) or formula (II).     A process for producing an aromatic polyester having an increased degree of polymerization, which comprises reacting a substantially linear, fiber forming aromatic polyester containing terminal carboxyl groups and having an aromatic dicarboxylic acid as a main acid component at an elevated temperature with a bis-cyclic imino ether compound of the formula (I) such as 2,2'-bis(2-oxazoline), 2,2'--bis(5,6-dihydro-4H-1,3-oxazine) thereby bonding the molecular chains of the aromatic polyester to each other by the terminal carboxyl groups thereof to rapidly form said aromatic polyester having and increased degree of polymerization. Said reaction can be carried out under atmospheric or elevated pressure. According to the process, an aromatic polyester having a low terminal carboxyl concentration and an increased degree of polymerization can be obtained. n =0 or 1; X1 and X2 typically are -CH2-CH2- or -CH2-CH2-CH2-: R1 and R2 typically are hydrogen or a monovalent hydrocarbon group; D typically is a divalent hydrocarbon group, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butylene.

    The invention provides a flame-retardant resin composition characterised in that it comprises (A) an aromatic polyester prepared by condensation polymerization between (a) a component substantially comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or an ester-­forming derivative thereof and (b) a component substantially comprising an aliphatic diol or an ester-­forming derivative thereof, (B) 0.1 to 30% by weight based on the total amount of the composition of a compound represented by the general formula (1) or (2) wherein X represents a halogen atom; Y₁ and Y₂ each represent a group selected from hydroxyl, carboxyl, glycidyl ester and glycidyl ether groups; Z is a monovalent or divalent organic group and n is an integer of 1 or more and (C) 0.1 to 30% by weight based on the total amount of the composition of a compound represented by the general formula (3): L₁-M-L₂      (3) wherein M is a divalent organic group L₁ and L₂ may be the same or different from each other and each represent a 3- to 8-membered cyclic reactive group selected from those having the general formulae (4) to (7): in which each of R₁, R₂ and R₃ represent a divalent organic group wherein a hydrogen atom directly bonded to the ring may be substituted with an alkyl and/or aryl group. The invention also includes electric wires coated therewith.
