    Transition-metal bimaleates and their solid solutions: Synthesis, structural, and thermoanalytical study

    Transition-metal hydrogen maleates of composition M(C4H3O4)(2) center dot 4H(2)O, where M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni, and their solid solutions were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and thermal analysis. X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy showed that both intramolecular and intermolecular H-bonds exist in these compounds. The generation of continuous substitutional solid solutions with cation substitution in these compounds was studied. The thermolysis mechanism was studied for both transition-metal hydrogen maleates and their solid solutions. The composite produced by thermolysis is stable up to 1200 degrees C in flowing helium.

    Two maleato bipyridine manganese(11) coordination polymers [Mn(male)(bpy)(H2O)](n)(.)2nH(2)O (1) and [Mn(male)(bpy)](n) (2) (H-2 male = maleic acid, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) were prepared in an ice-bath and at room temperature respectively, and were spectroscopically and structurally characterized. Complex 1 obtained at low temperature, possesses a one-dimensional helical chain in the solid state with hepta-coordination number at the manganese center. At room temperature, the hydrated complex I was irreversibly converted into the thermodynamically stable dehydrated product 2 with octahedral coordination. A similar dehydration effect was observed for the maleato manganese(II) complex with a more conjugated phenanthroline (phen) ligand. The maleato manganese(II) coordination polymer [Mn(male)(phen)](n) (.) nH(2)O (3) can be converted into the dehydrated product [Mn(male)(phen)](n) (4) upon heating, while the resultant product retains a similar pattern of coordination mode.     Biodegradable anionic polymers are disclosed which include recurring polymeric subunits preferably made up of vinylic and dicarboxylic monomers such as vinyl acetate or vinyl alcohol and maleic anhydride, itaconic anhydride or citraconic anhydride, or combinations thereof. Free radical polymerization is used in the synthesis of the polymers, which are then hydrolyzed to replace ester groups with alcohol groups. The polymers may be complexed with ions and/or mixed with fertilizers or seed to yield agriculturally useful compositions. The preferred products of the invention may be applied foliarly, to seeds, to fertilizer, or to the earth adjacent growing plants in order to enhance nutrient uptake by the plants.
