    The invention relates to non-crosslinked non-polypeptide polymers containing biodegradable lipophilic side chains incorporating methylene diester units of the formula --[--CO--O--C(R.sup.1 R.sup.2)--O--CO--]--, where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represents a hydrogen atom or a carbon-attached monovalent organic group or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together form a carbon-attached divalent organic group. The lipophilic moieties are biodegradatively cleavable to yield a water-soluble polymer.

The method of the present invention is for producing a polymer thin film with a plurality of microdomains regularly arranged in a continuous phase by microphase separation on a substrate, comprising steps for forming a grafted silsesquioxane film on the substrate, and for forming a pattern different in chemical properties from the grafted silsesquioxane film in such a way that the pattern corresponds to the microdomain arrangement.

To show a liquid crystal composition containing the polymerizable compound and satisfying at least one of characteristics such as high maximum temperature, low minimum temperature, small viscosity, suitable optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy and large specific resistance; and an AM device having characteristics such as a small persistence ratio, a short response time, a low threshold voltage, a large voltage holding ratio, a large contrast ratio and a long service life. The liquid crystal composition contains as a first component a polymerizable monomer that has a capability of a hydrogen bond donor and can form a hydrogen bond with an alignment film surface, or an oligomer, a prepolymer or a polymer of the monomer.
