  New 2,2':6',2 ":6 ",2'"-quaterpyridine (qtpy) ligands have been prepared which bear two or four {Ru(tpy)(2)} containing substituents; key synthetic steps involve "organic" reactions of functionalised ruthenium complexes. The new qtpy ligand has been used in the convergent spontaneous assembly of double-helical Ru4M2 and Ru8M2 (M = Ag or Cu) complexes. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
