  The unusual reactivity of 1-phenyl-1-ethanesulfonic acid in thionyl chloride was investigated. Mechanistic considerations led us to set up a new and efficient synthesis of E-arylethenesulfonamides starting from 1-hydroxy-1-arylalkanes.
