Several unsaturated thioacetic acids were synthesized as potential mechanism-based inhibitors of peptidylglycine alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM) prepared from horse serum. Trans-styrylthioacetic acid produced potent time-dependent inhibition of PHM. Potential mechanisms are proposed to explain PHM inactivation by unsaturated thioacetic acids.
