A novel 9,11-secosterol, 3β,6α-dihydroxy-9-oxo-9,11-seco-5α-cholest-7-en-11-al (1) , has been isolated from the marine sponge and its structure deduced by analysis of spectral data including 1H NMR COSY and 1H13C correlation NMR experiments. The structure of 1 was confirmed by synthesis starting from 7-dehydrocholesterol.
