In the presence of triethylamine or ionic fluoride catalysts, the addition of dimethyl or diethylphosphite to Garner aldehyde proceeded with good (1:9) diastereoselectivity leading to a separable mixture of (1S,2S)- and (1R,2S)-hydroxyphosphonates.
