The HClO4-catalyzed H2O2- and O2-oxidations of a dihyropyridine in acetonitrile were mechanistically investigated; the H2O2-oxidation under nitrogen followed a heterolytic course to yield the corresponding pyridinium salt along with a monooxygenated product, while the O2-oxidation produced the pyridinium salt and H2O2 via a radical-chain pathway in which H2O2 is not only merely the product but also an initiator.
