Tetraalkyl-(2)-tetrazenes are attacked by azodicarboxylates at the dialkylamino nitrogen. By intramolecular proton abstraction, the betain 3 first formed is converted into the ylide 4 which then rearranges into 5. Kinetics of the reaction are investigated by UV spectroscopy; a mechanism is proposed.

Photoactivation of alkynyl triazenes using different light sources induced an unusual cleavage of the triazene moiety leading to a methylene nitrile. By varying the reaction conditions, a cyanocarbene and a variety of substitution patterns bearing a nitrile group become selectively available under mild and metal-free conditions without the use of a toxic cyanating agent or the need for unstable substrates
