Use of an excess amount thionylchloride directly gave the corresponding thiophene-ring-fused compound via further reduction of generated thiophene-S-oxide with excess thionylchloride in some cases. The synthesis and characterization of a spirosilabifluorene cyclic trimer have been successfully demonstrated. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels were decreased through the C/Si substitution in the spiro-atom of spirobifluorene in the cyclic trimer. Furthermore, the chiroptical properties were investigated from both experimental and theoretical points of view with careful discussion.
