  The presence of the hydroxymethyl group allows facile functionalisation of 18-crown-6 and of [2.2.2]cryptand. A variety of lipophilic and polymer-supported macrocyclic polyethers is thus available. They are efficient and easily recyclable phase-transfer catalysts.
