Sulfonamide derivatives of the formula

R is H, halogen, nitro, CF3, alkyl or alkoxy;
R, is H, Cl or alkyl;
R2 is H or CH3: L is Cl, Br, CN, OH or a variety of organic groups;
R8 is H. CH3 or OCH3;
W is O or S;
A is
X is H, Cl, Br or various organic groups:
Y is CH3 or OCH3:
Z is N or optionally substituted CH;
Y' is H. CH3, OCH3 or OCH2CH3; and
Q is 0 or CH2;
and their salts, exhibit herbicidal and plant growth regulant activities.. They may be formulated for use in conventional manner.
The compound may be made e.g. by reacting a novel sulfonyl isocyanate of general formula
with the appropriate 2-aminoheterocycle of formula A-NHR8, or alternatively by displacing one or both chlorine atoms in the heterocyclic moiety of a novel sulfonylurea of general formula
by the appropriate alkoxy groups. Further methods of preparation are also disclosed.
