  A dihydropyridine of the formula: wherein R1 is alkyl or alkoxyalkyl, wherein R2 and R3 each is alkyl, wherein R4 is alpha-branched-chain alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, arylalkyl or aryloxyalkyl, or acylaminoalkyl, wherein benzene ring A bears one or more substituents selected from halogeno, cyano, nitro, trifluoromethyl and alkyl or bears the substituent =N-O-N= attached to the 2- and 3-positions, wherein Ar is phenylene, naphthylene, tetrahydronaphthylene, indanylene or pyridylene which is unsubstituted or which bears one or more substituents; wherein p is 0 or 1; wherein X is -0- or -NH-; wherein Xl is a direct link or is -0-, -S-, -NH- or -NHS02-; and wherein Y is straight- or branched-chain alkylene which may optionally be interrupted by one or two groups selected from oxygen, sulphur, imino, substituted imino, phenylene, substituted phenylene, pyridylene, cycloalkylene, 1,4-piperazinediyl, 1,3- or 1,4-piperidinediyl and amido groups; or an acid-addition salt thereof, processes for their manufacture and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The compound possess either beta-adrenergic blocking or calcium ion slow channel blocking properties, or both such properties, and may be used in the treatment of hypertension.

  (EN) 1,4-dihydropyridine esters (and their salts), having the formula (I), wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbonated rest, or an alkylmorpholinic group, R2 and R3 represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, X is an aryl rest, a benzyl, styryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl group or a naphtyl, quinolyl, isoquinolyl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, diphenyl, furyl, pyrryl or thiophenyl rest which is optionally substituted. R1 is a straight or branched chain, saturated, unsaturated or cyclic hydrocarbonated rest which may be interrupted by one or two oxygen or sulphur atoms and which may also be substituted by one or two hydroxyl groups. R1 may also represent the group formula (II); Y represents: a) the N-substituted amides of the nicotinic, salicylic and 4-hydroxybenzoic acids or of the monoalkylated, monoacylated or sulfonylated N-substituted piperazines having the formula: $(4,)$ b) a group having the formula: -OOC-R6 and -O-R6, wherein R6 is a saturated, unsaturated or cyclic, branched or not, heterocyclic or aromatic hydrocarbonated rest, which may optionally be substituted, c) the 2-tetrahydrofluryl and N-(4-benzoylpyperidinyl) rests.
