    An optical film is provided, which displays a positive wavelength dependency across the entire wavelength region from 400 to 800 nm, and is capable of imparting a specified retardation to transmitted light with a single sheet of film. The optical film particularly, includes a thermoplastic norbornene-based resin with a specified structure formed of a structural unit (I) which imparts a positive birefringence and a structural unit (II) which imparts a negative birefringence, and which satisfies particular conditions with respect to &Dgr;N I (&lgr;), &Dgr;N II (&lgr;), &Dgr;N I (800) and &Dgr;N II (800) wherein &Dgr;N I (&lgr;) and &Dgr;N II (&lgr;) represent the difference between a refractive index Nx(&lgr;) in an x axis direction at a wavelength &lgr;, and a refractive index Ny(s) in a y axis direction, and &Dgr;N I (800) and &Dgr;N II (800) represent the difference in refractive indexes at a wavelength of 800 nm, and the x axis represents the stretching direction and the y axis represents the in-plane direction perpendicular to the x direction.

    [Problems] To provide an optical film for a liquid crystal display, in which a wide range of a retardation of transmitted light can be controlled in manufacturing and good viewing angle compensation effects on such as preventing light leakage or color dropout (coloring) in true black display and achieving a high contrast in all directions can be obtained when used in liquid crystal display. [Means for Solving Problems] The optical film of the invention includes a film (a) layer made of a cyclic olefin resin and a film (b) layer made of a polyimide resin or a polyetherimide resin, wherein following formulae (1) and (2) are preferably satisfied: (1) 200 nm≦Rth≦1,000 nm and (2) 0≦R550≦200 nm, wherein Rth and R550 represent the retardation in the direction of film thickness and the in-plane retardation of the film, respectively, at wavelength of 550 nm.

    The thermoplastic resin composition of the present invention comprises (A) a cycloolefin-based polymer and (B) a vinyl-based polymer having a polar group, has a glass transition temperature of not lower than 100° C. and has a difference in glass transition temperature between the polymers (A) and (B) of less than 50° C. The optical film of the present invention comprises the thermoplastic resin composition of the invention. According to the present invention, it is possible to improve development of retardation at a low stress in the film stretching while retaining excellent heat resistance and optical properties and maintaining wavelength dispersion properties. The optical film of the invention exhibits properties that the dependence of retardation of a transmitted light on wavelength, said retardation being obtained by stretch orientation of the film, becomes larger as the wavelength becomes longer (positive wavelength dispersion properties), has low water absorption and low coefficient of photoelasticity, and is excellent in adhesion or bonding properties to other materials.
