Consecutive nucleophillic attack by an alcohol and then an amine to a trans-diiodo[bis(isocyanide)]platinum(II) complex 1 gives an unsymmetrically substituted neutral bis(carbene)platinum complex, trans-diiodo[diaminocarbene][(alkoxy)(amino)carbene]}-platinum(II) 4, some of which, bearing a long alkyl substituent on the carbene ligand, exhibit a liquid crystalline property.
