  the behavior of the extensively used system trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride/sulfoxide in the absence of any added nucleophilic species. We show here, with the help of 19 F NMR spectroscopy, that in the case of trifluoromethyl sulfoxides this results initially in the net reduction of the sulfoxide to a sulfane. We propose a mechanism involving sulfoxide itself as the reducing agent.
