Polymers having molecular weights of 20,000 to 2500,000 and exhibiting dispersant, antioxidant and viscosity index improving properties can be obtained by reacting aromatic nitroso compounds with base polymers derived from a first monomer which is an alkyl ester of acrylic acid or an alpha-alkyl substituted acrylic acid, and
a second monomer which is polyunsaturated and has double bonds of different reactivity. Suitable second monomers are also esters, amides etc of acrylic or alpha alkyl substituted acrylic acid with unsaturated alcohols, amines, thiols or substituted phenols. Optionally a third monomer may be present, being preferably an aminoalkyl acrylamide or aminoalkyl alkyl acrylamide.
