    Diamine derivatives of tris[4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanediono]europium were synthesized and characterized by NMR, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The emission efficiency and decay times of the produced Eu(III) coordination complexes in acetone solutions were measured upon ligand excitation. The effect of the amine ligands was studied and the relation between the emission and the structure of the synthesized compounds was discussed. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Three kinds of rare earth ternary complexes of Eu3+ with HTTA and M (M = 5-NO(2)Phen,2,2'-Dipy and TPPO) have been synthesized and characterized using various spectral techniques such as elemental analysis, TGA-DTA, IR, UV and fluorescent. Results show that the complexes of Eu(III) emit strong red luminescence when excited by UV light. The complex Eu(TTA)(3)5NO(2)Phen posses the highest sensitized luminescent efficiency and the longest lifetime in the studied complexes. TG curves indicate that Eu(TTA)(3)5NO(2)Phen is most stable. In device ITO/PVK/Eu(TTA)(3)5NO(2)Phen/Al, Eu3+ may be excited by intramolecular energy transfer from ligands as observed by electroluminescence. The main emitting peak at 614 nm can be attributed to the transition of D-5(0) -> E-7(2) of Eu3+ ion, and this process results in the enhancement of red emission from electroluminescence device.   • X-ray structure and temperature dependent luminescent properties of two bimetallic europium complexes

    The structural, luminescent and temperature dependent luminescent properties of two homodinuclear europium complexes bridged by 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) are reported. beta-Diketonate ligands 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-furyl)-1,3-butanedione (tfa) and 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedione (tta) are used as capping ligands resulting in complexes of the form [Eu(tfa)(3)](2)bpm (1) and [Eu(tta)(3)](2)bpm (2). All Eu-III ions are eight coordinate with six O atoms from the beta-diketones and two N atoms from the polyazine bridging ligand. Excitation of the beta-diketonate ligands tfa or tta at ca. 340 nm in toluene solutions results in the characteristic Eu-III emission in the visible region of the spectrum. The emission intensity and lifetime associated with the Eu-III centers decrease as the temperature of the solution is increased. Lifetime measurements are fit to a monoexponential while the temperature dependent lifetime data is fit to an Arrhenius-type equation. Evaluation of the data in comparison to data obtained from the monometallic Eu-III analogs reveal very similar photoluminescent properties. This suggests little electronic communication between Eu-III ions via the polyazine bpm bridging ligand. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
