A Facile and Selective Procedure for Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides on Silica Gel Supported Magnesium Monoperoxyphthalate (MMPP) in Dichloromethane
reactions, does not require strong electrophilicactivators, engages a broad range of C(sp3)‐, C(sp2)‐, and C(sp)‐nucleophiles, and seamlessly integrates with C−H and C−X magnesiation. Given the central character of sulfur compounds in organic chemistry, this protocol allows access to unrelated carbonyls, olefins, organometallics, halides, and boronic esters through a single strategy.

D4-symmetry. The resolved benzaldehyde was synthesized in seven steps from p-benzoquinone and cyclopentadiene and included a resolution via diastereomeric ketals. A manganese chloride complex of porphyrin 1 was used as a catalyst for the asymmetric epoxidation of aromatic substituted alkenes in the presence of excess sodiumhypochlorite in up to 7,200 turnovers and up to 76% e.e and >90% yield.

The scope of the magnesium monoperoxyphthalate (MMPP) oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides has been extended by using hydrated silica gel as a solid support in dichloromethane media. This procedure works in the presence of a number of functional groups on the sulfides, including carbonyl and alkene groups that have been known to undergo Baeyer-Villiger oxidation and epoxidation with MMPP when using more conventional procedures. To our knowledge, this is the first example of oxidation of sulfides containing a carbonyl group with MMPP in non-aqueous media without any Baeyer-Villiger reaction. The reported procedure is easy to perform, product separation is trivial and it produces excellent yields.

Several titanium derivatives supported on silica have been investigated as catalysts in the sulfide→sulfoxide oxidation; the supported titanium/tartaric acid catalyst is highly suited to reactions carried out with H2O2, leading to high yields and high sulfoxide/sulfone selectivities, while small asymmetric inductions (up to 13%) are observed.
