An aromatic polyester film having reduced surface defects and a high thickness uniformity can be produced by using an aromatic polyester material containing 0.1 to 45 mmol % of a quaternary phosphonium sulfate based on the difunctional carboxylic acid component and having an a.c. volume resistivity of 6.5 x 108Ω.cm or less in a state of molten film, and giving an electric charge to a molten film in noncontact manner in the vicinity of a rotatory cooling drum to establish close contact of the film with the drum.
