A novel and practical one-pot procedure is described for the preparation of several new of 3H-spiro[isobenzofuran-1,6′-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine]-2′,3,4′,5′-tetraones based on the addition reaction of ninhydrin and 6-aminouracils followed by oxidative cleavage of their corresponding dihydroxyindenopyrrolopyrimidines.

N,N-Dimethylazidochloromethyleniminiumchloride (azidophosgeniminiumchloride) (1) reacts by diazogrouptransfer with 1,3-dimethyl-4-aryl-(and alkyl)aminouracils 4 to give, under mild “onepot” reaction conditions, a very good yield of 3-aryl-(and 3-alkyl)-4,6-dimethyl-5,7-dioxo-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidines (8-azatheophyllines) 8. That reaction proceeds, very likely, through formation of non-isolated
