A good yield of 5-(N-phenethylamino)salicylic acid derivatives was successfully obtained from the corresponding methyl 2-acetoxy-5-(N-phenethylamino)benzoate esters by rapid and selective reduction of the amide group in the acyl protected salicylic acid with NaBH(4)/acetic acid in dioxane followed by hydrolysis of the ester group.
