A mild and fully catalytic aryl–aryl cross coupling via gold-catalysed C–H activation has been achieved by merging gold and photoredox catalysis. The procedure is free of stoichiometric oxidants and additives, which were previously required in gold-catalysed C–H activation reactions. We have achieved the regiodivergent synthesis of hexabenzocoronene-based [6]helicenes via rhodium-mediated intramolecular [2+2+2] and [2+1+2+1] cycloadditions of triynes followed by Scholl reaction. The resulting HBC-based [6]helicenes exhibited π-stacking-induced chiral self-recognition.

Preparation of a large-sized highly flexible carbon nanohoop

The preparation of large-sized carbon nanohoops 1 and 2 was acheieved by Pt-mediated macrocyclization of the diborylated hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivative containing four mesityl substituents at the periphery.
