  [EN] A process for the preparation of a polycyclic dye of formula (1) by reacting a compound of formula (2) with a compound of formula (3), wherein Ring A is unsubstituted or is substituted by from 1 to 5 groups; Ring B is unsubstituted or is substituted by from 1 to 5 groups; X and X<1> each independently is -H, halogen, cyano, alkyl or aryl; X<2> and X<3> each independently is halogen; and Z is -CN, -CO2R or -CONR<1>R<2>, in which R is optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aryl or optionally substituted aralkyl, and R<1> and R<2> each independently is -H, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl. A process for the preparation of compounds of formula (3) and novel compounds of formula (3) are also claimed. The compounds of formula (1) are useful as dyes particularly for the coloration of synthetic textile materials.
