  Hyperconjugation between the CH-Si bond and the charged pyridinium pi system in the N-methyl 4-trimethylsilylmethyl pyridinium ion (8), manifests in the crystal structure as lengthening of the CH2-Si bond, shortening of the CH-Ci(ipso) bond and smaller but systematic effects on the C-C bond distances within the pyridinium ring. The structural effects are supported in solution by systematic effects on the Si-29-C-13 and C-13-C-13 one-bond coupling constants. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  Cα-substituted 4-methylpyridines have been N-lithiated and reacted with chlorotrimethylsilane and other electrophiles. The lithiated Cα-NMe2 substituted intermediate shows an interesting dichotomy of behavior towards electrophiles: It represents the borderline between compounds for which an extreme N or Cα regio-nucleophilicity is observed.
