    Chemical light producing systems and the chemiluminescent formulations contained therein are taught which exhibit reduced hydrolysis and thereby are characterized by an inherently long shelf-life and commercial viability. By replacing the typical oxalate ester, e.g. (bis3,4,6-trichloro-2-[(pentoxy)carbonyl] phenyl} oxalate) with a branched chain oxalic acid ester represented by the general formula: wherein the group designated as R contains from 4-15 carbons, wherein the carbon of attachment of R to the oxygen is via a primary carbon, and wherein substructure A is composed of substituents selected from the group including alkyl chains, alkyl rings, aromatic rings and combinations thereof such that R is nonlinear, water hydrolysis of the oxalate ester is retarded. This retardation of the hydrolysis changes the storage constraints of the oxalate ester.

    In one embodiment the present invention is a polycarbonate comprising structural units derived from at least one dihydric phenol, a carbonate precursor, and at least one member selected from the group consisting of an oxanilide-comprising compound, an oxamate-comprising compound, and mixtures thereof. In another embodiment the present invention is a method for making a polycarbonate comprising structural units derived from at least one dihydric phenol and at least one member selected from the group consisting of an oxanilide-comprising compound, an oxamate-comprising compound, and mixtures thereof, which comprises the step of contacting under reactive conditions at least one dihydric phenol, a carbonate precursor, and at least one member selected from the group consisting of an oxanilide-comprising compound, an oxamate-comprising compound, and mixtures thereof. In still another embodiment the present invention is an article comprising a polycarbonate comprising oxanilide structural units. In still another embodiment the present invention is a method for making a symmetrical or unsymmetrical oxanilide-comprising dihydric phenol which comprises the step of contacting at least one aromatic amine bearing a hydroxy group with a diaryl oxalate or a dialkyl oxalate bearing alkyl groups each substituted with at least one electron-withdrawing group. In still another embodiment the present invention is a method for making an oxamate-comprising monohydric phenol which comprises the step of contacting an aromatic amine bearing a hydroxy group with a diaryl oxalate or a dialkyl oxalate bearing alkyl groups each substituted with at least one electron-withdrawing group.

    There is provided a flexible, thin, rectangular, chemiluminescent device comprised of a back sheet of a laminated metal foil having heat sealed thereto at its edges a bi-component front sheet, the first component of which is a laminated metal foil and the second component of which is a transparent or translucent polyolefin sheet, said first and second components being heat sealed to each other at their adjacent latitudinal edge, from about 20% to about 50% of the surface area of said front sheet being comprised of said first component; temporary separation means positioned so as to divide the interior area of said device into two compartments, one under each of said components, the compartment under said second component having positioned therein an absorbent material containing a solvent solution of an oxalate and, optionally, a fluorescer, and the compartment under said first component containing an activator solution.

    The present invention provides a porous, flexible structure comprising A) a non-particulate phase comprising a vinyl halide or vinylidene halide polymer having a molecular weight of about 100,000 to about 500,000 which constitutes 0.5 to about 15.0 weight percent of total polymer, B) an agglomerated particle phase comprising either 1) about 85.0 to about 99.5 weight percent of total polymer of vinyl halide or vinylidene halide polymer particles having a diameter of from about 25 to about 125 µm and a molecular weight of from about 50,000 to about 120,000, or mixtures of said particles, or 2) about 45 to about 98.5 weight percent of total polymer of vinyl halide or vinylidene halide polymer particles having a diameter of from about 25 to about 125 µm and a molecular weight of from about 50,000 to about 120,000, or mixtures of said particles, and about 1 to about 40 weight percent of total polymer of vinyl halide or vinylidene halide polymer particles having a diameter of from about 130 to about 225 µm and a molecular weight of from about 100,000 to about 225,000 and C) a plasticizer comprising a solvent solution of a chemiluminescent compound and, optionally, a fluorescer, dispersed throughout both said phases.
