    The invention describes syntheses and purifications of several perfluorocarbon-soluble compounds having a general formula RF - L - X or RF - L - X - L - RF, wherein RF is a perfluorocarbon group, X is a hydrophilic moiety, and L is an amide linkage of general structure -CO-NH-. The invention also provides microemulsions comprising a PFC forming an oil phase, water or aqueous solution forming a water phase, and a PEG-based fluorosurfactant with an HFB (hydrophilic groups to fluorophilic groups balance) value from about 7 to about 13. The invention also provides a method of amidification of a fluorocompound. The method involves mixing perfluoracid chloride of a general formula CnF2n+1COCI with a compound containing an amine group with a general structure R-NH2 under reaction conditions sufficient to obtain a product having a general formula CnF2n+1-CONH-R.

    Coatings are cured by simultaneous exposure to radiant energy and condensing inert perfluoro­chemical vapors. The invention also includes an apparatus for use in curing coatings having a vessel (10) with reservoir (5) filled with inert perfluorochemical liquid (4), heated by heater (2). Cooling coils (13) and (14), for condensing perfluorochemical vapors (6), are located in the inlet (11) and outlet (12) of the vessel (10). A coating (8) on a substrate (7) is carried through the vessel (10) on a continuously moving belt (15). The coating (8) is cured by vapors (6) and radiant energy from energy source (9) passing through windows (16).

In preferred embodiments, the ratio of solubilizer to fluorinated solvent is the azeotropic ratio. The solubilizer can be an alcohol or cyclic ether. The methods finds utility in hard disc drive applications, where perfluorinated polyethers are used as lubricants. Compositions are also provided.

  • Method for liquid/liquid extraction of molecular weight fractions of perfluorinated polyethers

    A liquid/liquid extraction method is used for separating a perfluorinated polyether (PFPE) into two molecular-weight distributions using an alcohol or cyclic ether as one solvent and a fluorinated solvent as the other solvent. The more polar alcohol or cyclic ether solvent extracts the lower molecular weight PFPE and the less polar fluorinated solvent extracts the higher molecular weight PFPE. In addition, when the PFPE is a mixture of PFPEs with different end groups, such as a mixture of predominantly Z-Tetraol but with other PFPEs with Z-Dol end groups, there is an enrichment of the Z-Tetraol in the more polar solvent. The preferred PFPE is a mixture of PFPEs in as-purchased Z-Tetraol and the preferred solvents are methanol or trifluoroethanol as one solvent and a perfluorinated hydrocarbon, such as perfluorohexane, as the other solvent.
