Nitrosocarbonylmethane reacts with a variety of olefins via an ene pathway, yielding N-substituted hydroxamic acid products in a preparatively useful reaction. With unsymmetrical olefins, observed regiochemical preferences can be rationalized by a mechanism involving electrophilic addition of nitrogen to the olefin.
