    The complex [AuCl(AsPh3)] reacted with MgBr(mes) (mes - mesityl) to give the corresponding gold(I) derivative [Au(mes)(AsPh3)], which undergoes substitution reactions with neutral ligands to give the neutral complexes [Au(mes)L] (L = Ph2PCH2PPh2, PPh3 or PPh2Me) or with QX to afford anionic complexes Q[Au (mes) X] [X = Cl, Q = P(CHPh) Ph3; X = Br, Q = N (PPh3)2]. The latter reacted with X, (X = Cl or Br) to give gold(III) complexes, Q[Au(mes)X3] [X = Cl, Q = P(CH2Ph)Ph3; X = Br, Q = N(PPh3)2]. The reaction of [Au(mes)(PPh3)] with [Ag(OSO2CF3)L] [L = PPh3 or tetrahydrothiophene (tht)] afforded [{(Ph3P)Au(mu-mes)AgL)n][SO3CF3]n (L = PPh3, n = 1; L = tht, n = 2). The structure of [{(Ph3P)Au(P-mes)Ag(tht))2][SO3CF3]2 has been determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study, which shows an Au-Ag distance of 2.8245(6) angstrom.

    The phosphine (PPh2)4TTF (P4) (1) reacts with the gold(I) complexes [AuX(tht)] (X = Cl, C6F5; tht = tetrahydrothiophene) or [Au(Mes)(AsPh3)] (Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) to give tetranuclear derivatives [(AuX)4P4] (X = Cl, 2; C6F5, 3; Mes, 4). The analogous reaction starting with [Au(Trip)(AsPh3)] (Trip = 2,4,6-Pri3C6H2) provides the dinuclear derivative [(AuTrip)2P4] (5). When the phosphine P4 reacts with [Cu(MeCN)4]PF6, AgCF3SO3 or [Au(tht)2]CF3SO3 in a 2∶1 molar ratio, complexes [M(P4)2]A (A = PF6, M = Cu, 6; A = CF3SO3, M = Ag, 7, Au, 8) are obtained, or [M2P4](CF3SO3)2}n (M = Ag, 9; Au, 10) when 1∶1 molar ratios are used instead. Visible-ultraviolet and electrochemical studies of the new complexes are reported. Two, reversible one-electron oxidations to the mono- and di-cation occur in complexes 2–10 at more positive potentials than the two reversible oxidations exhibited by the free P4 (1) ligand. The structures of 1 and 2 have been confirmed by X-ray analysis.

    The reaction of the complex [Au(mes)L] (mes = mesityl, L = PPh(3), AsPh(3)) with Ag(OSO2CF3), Ag(OClO3), or [Cu(CNMe)(4)]PF6, in molar ratio 2:1, affords trinuclear derivatives [Au-mu-mes)L}(2)M]A [M = Ag, L = PPh(3), A = SO3CF3- (1); L = AsPh(3), A = ClO4- (2a), SO3CF3-(2b); M = Cu, A = PF6- L = PPh(3) (3), AsPh(3) (4)]. Complexes 1 and 2 react further with various ligands in a 1:1 molar ratio to give the dinuclear compounds [AuAg(mu-mes)(PPh(3))L]SO3CF3 (L = PPh(3), tetrahydrothiophene, 2,2'-bipyridine, or SPPh(3)) or [AuAg(mu-mes)(AsPh(3))L]A (L = AsPh(3), A = SO3CF3-; L = 1/2 Ph(2)AsCH(2)AsPh(2), A = ClO4-). The structure of [Au(mu-mes)AsPh(3)}Ag-2](ClO4) (2a) has been determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study, which shows an Au-Ag distance of 2.7758(8) Angstrom; the trinuclear species are connected by short Au Au contacts of 3.132 Angstrom to form a chain polymer.
