Investigation into the chemistry of benzyl clavulanate under a variety of reaction conditions has led to acid catalysed one-step conversion to ether and thioether derivatives. Generation of nitrogen-containing displacement products proceeds the reactive dichloroacetate (6). Several products arising from these reactions by rearrangement or ring cleavage have been identified and characterised.
