Quinonoid mesoionic compounds having a 2,3-diphenyltetrazolium ring were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. Compounds possessing an inserted benzene ring were found that a dipolar (5-tetrazolylio)phenolate structure contributes importantly to the ground state of the mesoions.
