    By a bifunctional organic ligand 2-(benzimidazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid (H(2)bitp) featuring both imidazol-carboxylate groups, two new Cu(II)-containing coordination polymers (CPs) with the chemical formulae of [Cu(bitp)(bpa) 0.5(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5bpa} (n) (1, bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylane) and [Cu-1.5(bitp)(Hbitp)(2,2 '-bpy)(H2O)]center dot 3H(2)O} (n) (2, 2,2 '-bpy = 2,2 '-bipyridine) have been successfully prepared by reaction of Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O with the H(2)bitp ligand in the presence of different N-donor co-ligands. Then, the protective activity of compounds against periodontitis was assessed and the related mechanism was discussed at the same time. First, after the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was conducted and the relative expression levels of the nf-kappa b and p53 genes related with inflammatory response in the periodontal mucosal cells was measured. In addition to this, the releasing levels of the inflammatory cytokines in to the gingival crevicular fluid was determined with compound 1 or 2 with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detection assay.
