    This disclosure relates to a composition for use as an additive for fuels and lubricants including a reductive amination product of a vinyl terminated macromonomer (VTM) based aldehyde. Optionally aldehyde is reacted with the amino compound under condensation conditions sufficient to give an imine intermediate, and the imine intermediate is reacted under hydrogenation conditions sufficient to give the composition. The aldehyde is formed by reacting a VTM under hydroformylation conditions sufficient to form the aldehyde. A reductive amination method for making a composition for use as an additive for fuels and lubricants. The method includes reacting a VTM based aldehyde with an amino compound containing at least one —NH— group under condensation conditions sufficient to give an imine intermediate, and reacting the imine intermediate under hydrogenation conditions sufficient to give said composition. The aldehyde is formed by reacting a VTM under hydroformylation conditions sufficient to form the aldehyde.

    A carboxylic derivative composition derived from a carboxylated isobutylene-polyene copolymer having n ranging from about 200 to about 10,000, said copolymer having thereon from about 0.8 to about 7 moles per mole of copolymer of groups derived from at least one &agr;,&bgr;-unsaturated carboxylic acid or reactive equivalent thereof, reacted with at least one of (a) amines characterized by the presence within their structure of at least one condensable H—N< group, (b) alcohols. (c) reactive metals or reactive metal compounds, and (d) a combination of two or more of any of (a) through (c), the components of (d) having been reacted with the carboxylated isobutylene-polyene copolymer simultaneously or sequentially, in any order. Also, a process for preparing carboxylic derivative compositions, additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions containing the carboxylic derivative compositions and methods for increasing the viscosity index of lubricating oil compositions.

    Emulsifiers are disclosed which comprise the reaction product of component (I) with component (II). Component (I) comprises the reaction product of certain carboxylic acids or anhydrides, or ester or amide derivatives thereof, with ammonia, at least one amine, at least one alkali and/or at least one alkaline-earth metal Component (II) comprises certain phosphorus-containing acids; or metal salts of said phosphorus-containing acids, the metals being selected from the group consisting of magnesium, calcium, strontium, chromium, manganese, iron, molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, aluminum, tin, lead, and mixtures of two or more thereof. These emulsifiers are useful in water-in-oil explosive emulsions.

    This invention relates to a composition comprising: a mixture of a brine and a liquid oil, and (A) an emulsifying amount of (i) at least one reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acylating agent, and at least one of (a) ammonia, (b) an alcohol, (c) an amine, (d) or mixtures thereof, or at least one salt of the reaction product; or (ii) at least one reaction product of a hydroxyaromatic compound, an aldehyde, and an amine. The compositions of the present invention have beneficial emulsification properties. These compositions are useful in drilling, workingover and completing well-bore holes. The well-drilling compositions of the present invention have beneficial viscosity, pumping and suspension properties.

    This invention is directed to water-in-oil emulsions which are useful as explosives. These emulsions comprise: a discontinuous aqueous phase comprising at least one oxygen-supplying component; a continuous organic phase comprising at least one carbonaceous fuel; and a minor emulsifying amount of at least one emulsifier. The emulsifier is the product made by the reaction of component (A) with component (B), component (A) being at least one substituted succinic acylating agent, said substituted succinic acylating agent consisting of substituent groups and succinic groups wherein the substituent groups are derived from a polyalkene, said acylating agents being characterized by the presence within their structure of an average of at least 1.3 succinic groups for each equivalent weight of substituent groups, and component (B) being ammonia and/or at least one amine.
