  Antiinflammatory carbinoloimidazoles are provided which have the formula: ##STR1## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 independently are H, F, Cl, Br, CH.sub.3, CF.sub.3 or S(O).sub.n R.sup.3 where n is 0, 1 or 2 and R.sup.3 is alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is H or alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms with the proviso that R.sup.4 is H when m is 2 or 3; and m is 1 to 3. The carbinoloimidazoles are preferably administered as topical antiinflammatory compositions.

  Halohydrins of the formula: wherein R and R1, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen or alkyl; X, Y and Z are each independently hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine and A is chlorine or bromine, are prepared by reacting a tertiary alcohol of the formula or a substituted alkene of the formula with chlorine, bromine, hypochlorous acid or hypobromous acid in an aqueous medium. Preferably the aqueous medium is a mixture of water and an amide solvent selected from dimethyl formamide, diethyl formamide and dimethyl acetamide and the reaction is carried out in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The halohydrins are useful intermediates for fungicides.
