    Compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein ring B stands for 1,4-phenylene or a trans-1,4-disubstituted cyclohexane ring and A stands for a group with 1 to 3 six-membered rings, which together with ring B represents a central group of formulae II-XIII; R.sup.1 signifies a straight-chain alkyl group containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms or when R.sup.1 is attached to a benzene, monofluorinated benzene or pyrimidine, ring R.sup.1 also signifies a straight-chain alkoxy group with 1 to 9 carbon atoms; and R.sup.2 signifies hydrogen, cyano or a straight-chain alkyl group containing 1 to 7 carbon atoms, their manufacture, liquid crystalline mixtures which contain said compounds and their use for electro-optical purposes are described. The compounds of formula I are especially valuable as components in liquid crystal mixtures and for the most part themselves have liquid crystalline properties.

    C14 alkyl benzoate ABG001, derived from naturally occurring gentisides, was reported to exhibit neurotrophic activity which is similar to NGF (Nerve Growth Factor). In this research, ABG001 was modified by the strategy of isosteric replacement and conformational restriction with the purpose of improving the bioactivity. The cellular neurotrophic activity of those ABG001 derivatives were evaluated, among which 3-hydroxyquinolin-2-(1H)-one A3 and 4-decylphenol ester B7 displayed much better neurotrophic activity compared with ABG001, which highlights the potential of those novel scaffolds for future neurotrophic agent development.

    There is provided a liquid crystal composition containing at least one compound represented by General Formula (a). There is also provided a liquid crystal display device using such a liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition of the present invention has the following properties without suffering reductions in refractive index anisotropy (Δn) and nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T ni ): sufficiently low viscosity (η), sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ 1 ), a large elastic constant (K 33 ), a high voltage holding ratio after UV exposure (VHR (UV)), and a negative dielectric anisotropy (Δ∈) with a large absolute value. A liquid crystal display device of, for example, a VA type that uses such a liquid crystal composition has a high response speed and excellent display quality with defective display being eliminated or reduced.
