  Condensation of chloracetic-acid with fluroanthene gave fluoranthene-3-acetic acid (I), fluoranthene-1,3-diacetic acid (II) and fluoranthene-1,3,6-triacetic acid (III). Decarboxylation of these acids yielded 3-methylfluoranthene, 1,3-dimethylfluoranthene and 1,3,6-trimethylfluoranthene (IV). The NMR spectrum of the latter indicates a fixation of 2 doubles bonds as shown in formula IV.
