  • Rewritable color recording media consisting of leuco dye and biphenyl developer with a long alkyl chain

    Media formulated using two compounds (a leuco dye and 4-alkoxyl-4′-hydroxybiphenyl) were colored in the amorphous state and colorless in the crystalline state. As the alkyl chain length of the biphenyl compound increased, the contrast ratio and thermal stability of the amorphous states increased. Additionally, the crystallization velocity increased for the media with a long alkyl chain. Leuco dyes with a high glass transition temperature also produced thermally stable amorphous states. The origin of the long alkyl chain effects is discussed.

  • Molecular Mechanism of Anomalous Increase in the Helical Pitch of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Induced by Achiral Dopants

    A dopant-induced anomalous increase in the helical pitch of dicholesteryl 10,12-docosadiynedioate 1 is explained by generation of smectic clusters in the cholesteric phase where the dopants act as promoters of smectic domains. The dopants, having a mesogenic core and the proper length of alkyl chains on both their molecular sides, such as 4,4'-dialkylazobenzenes, 4,4'-dialkylazoxybenzenes and 4,4'-dialkylbiphenyls, considerably increase the pitch. However, dopants having benzene or a binaphthyl structure in the molecular center, an alkyl chain at one side of the molecules and Z-isomers of azobenzene and azoxybenzene derivatives, slightly decrease the pitch by acting as impurities that decrease the transition temperature of the host. An X-ray diffraction study of the cholesterics revealed that the pitch increases with an increase in size and amount of the smectic domains induced by the appropriate dopants.
  • New Liquid Crystal Materials with a Terminal Alkyl Sulfonic Acid Unit

    New liquid crystal materials with a terminal alkyl sulfonic acid group were synthesized. The mesomorphic behavior of these compounds was evaluated. These compounds generate the SmA phase, and in the SmA phase, the molecules seem to be able to transport protons. At the temperature of the smectic phase, the proton current increased sharply. The proton transport ability increases about 700 times by forming a smectic molecular order.
  • Design and Synthesis of Novel Calamitic and Discotic Materials Based on the Photorefractive Carbazole Unit

    The incorporation of photorefractive molecular units, such as carbazole, into anisotropic materials (liquid crystals) may offer many advantages over conventional electrical poling of photorefractive polymers. Thus, a series of symmetric 3,6-disubstituted carbazole derivatives with well-known biphenyl and triphenylene liquid-crystalline moieties was synthesized and characterized. These modifications were achieved by the esterification of bishydroxy carbazole derivatives with monoalkylated biphenyl carboxylic acids and alkylation of bisacylated bromo- derivatives of carbazole with monohydroxy pentaalkoxy triphenylene. The pure compounds are not liquid-crystalline, even when doped with trinitrofluorenone (TNF), unlike triphenylene/carbazole materials that we reported previously. These compounds, although not liquid-crystalline, may be of interest in the field of photorefractivity.
