The Cobalt-Way to Heterophenylenes: Syntheses of 2-Thianorbiphenylenes, Monoazabiphenylenes, and Linear 1-Aza[3]phenylene {Biphenyleno[2,3-a]cyclobuta[1,2-b]pyridine}
CpCo(CO) 2 catalyzes the cocyclization of ortho-diethynylthiophenes and -pyridines with alkynes to construct the corresponding thia- and azaphenylenes. This strategy is applied to the synthesis of linear 1-aza[3]phenylene, the first higher heterophenylene.
Development of Molecular Solar Thermal (MOST) systems for harvesting and storing solar energy is based on molecularphotoswitches that undergo photoisomerizations to metastable isomers. One challenge is to achieve low-molecular weight molecules that absorb at sufficiently long wavelengths to match the solar spectrum. Here we show that this can be achieved by linking two norbornadiene (NBD) photoswitches

A diyne-containing (co)polymer which is soluble in organic solvents, has excellent processability, and gives a cured coating film excellent in heat resistance, solvent resistance, low-dielectric characteristics, and mechanical strength; processes for producing the same; and a cured film.
The diyne-containing (co)polymer contains at least 10 mol% repeating units represented by the following formula (1) and has a weight-average molecular weight of from 500 to 1,000,000:

A series of short oligo(p-phenylene-ethynylene)- and oligo(p-phenylenevinylene)-type molecular rods with an electronically rich thiophene or thieno[3,2-b]thiophene core unit and sulfur anchoring groups (AcS-, t-BuS-) at the termini have been synthesised using Sonogashira coupling or Homer-Wads-worth-Emmons (E)-olefination methodology. The collection of linear/bent, conjugated/cross-conjugated systems has been characterised by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, optical/calculated HOMO-LUMO gaps and calculated excitation energies. He I and He II photoelectron spectra of all isomeric mono- and diethynylthiophenes were recorded. The electronic structure was analyzed and spectra assigned on the basis of empirical considerations and semiempirical MO calculations. The spectra indicate various interactions taking place between thiophene pi and ethynyl pi orbitals. The relationship between deduced electronic structure and formation of novel polymer materials is discussed.
