The reaction of nitrilium salts with azides allows the synthesis with good yields of 1,4,5-alkyl or -aryl-substituted tetrazolium salts. The mechanism of this reaction is discussed. Reduction or alkylation of these tetrazolium salts leads to the corresponding tri- or tetra-substituted tetrazolines.
