  The X-ray structure of the first stable nitrilium ylide is reported showing the central ylidic system to be essentially linear with only slight bends at the central carbon and nitrogen (4°); however MINDO/3 calculations on model compounds suggest the ylide functionality is quite flexible with low deformation energies.
