Semiempirical calculations show that the intermediate formed by reaction between peroxydisulfate anion and the phenolate ion (the Elbsoxidation) is the species resulting from reaction of the tautomeric carbanion rather than the one resulting from attack by the oxyanion. The compounds disclosed have utility as functionalized monomers and co-monomers in polyamides, polyoxadiazoles. Incorporation of the monomers into polymers can provide improved soil resistance to articles produced from the polymers.
