Synthesis of graft copolymers of polyethylene: grafting of fluorinated model compound oligomers

The condensation reaction of perfluorinated amines on to (succinic anhydride)-HDPE (high-density polyethylene) graft copolymer have been studied. Four different amine structures have been synthesized which have been analyzed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy GC-MS methods. Model structures of succinimide and succinamic acid have been synthesized with each amine and analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy in order to determine the structure of the copolymer obtained. A scale of reactivity has been deduced as a function of the amine structure. Grafting levels of copolymer have been determined by elemental analysis of fluorine.

We have prepared and characterized (by H-1 NMR and MS methods) N-4-(2'-F-hexylethoxy)phenylmaleimide and N-4-(2'-F-hexylethylthio)phenylmaleimide. The behaviour of these fluorinated maleimides (FM) towards various vinyl ethers (2-chloroethylvinyl ether, benzylvinyl ether) in radical copolymerization has been studied. Generally, maleimides and vinyl ethers lead to alternated copolymers but, in this case, the copolymer was not alternated. The thermal behaviour of the copolymers has been evaluated and their thermal decomposition explained.

Asymmetricreduction of ketimines 1 with trichlorosilane can be catalyzed by N-methylvaline-derived Lewis-basic formamides 3a−d with high enantioselectivity (≤95% ee) and low catalyst loading (1−5 mol %) at room temperature in toluene. Appending a fluorous tag, as in 5a−c, simplifies the isolation procedure, while preserving high enantioselectivity (≤92% ee).
