‐Activating Iron(II)‐Benzilate Complexes of Neutral N5 Donor Ligands

Three new iron(II)-benzilate complexes [(N4Py)FeII (benzilate)]ClO4 (1), [(N4PyMe2 )FeII (benzilate)]ClO4 (2) and [(N4PyMe4 )FeII (benzilate)]ClO4 (3) of neutral pentadentate nitrogen donor ligands have been isolated and characterized to study their dioxygen reactivity. Single-crystal X-ray structures reveal a mononuclear six-coordinate iron(II) center in each case, where benzilate binds to the iron
of unactivated alkyl chlorides with tethered alkenes. The cleavage of strong C(sp3)−Cl bonds is mediated by a highly nucleophilic low‐valent cobalt or nickel intermediate generated by visible‐light photoredox reduction employing a copper photosensitizer. series of iron(II) complexes with pentadentate N5 ligands that react with H(2)O(2) to generate transient low-spin Fe(III)-OOH intermediates. These intermediates have low-spiniron(III) centers exhibiting hydroperoxo-to-iron(III) charge-transfer bands in the 500-600-nm region. The present invention relates to iron and manganese complexes based on hexadentate ligand systems containing one carboxylato donor and five nitrogen donor atoms and to their use in methods for the catalysis of the oxidation of organic substrates. The manganese complexes of the invention also may be used as (pro)-catalysts in methods for the catalysis of water.
