    57 Under particular conditions, a cationic ring-opening polymerization of a first oxirane monomer selected from the group consisting of an acyclic glycidyl ether, a cyclic glycidyl ether, and a haloalkyl epoxide, in the presence of a hydroxyl-containing organic material ("HCM"), for example a polymer (referred to herein as a "hydroxyl-prepolymer"), and a particular catalyst, produces a polymerization having "living polymerization" characteristics. The result is that molecular weight (mol wt) of the resulting polymer is directly proportional to the conversion of the monomer to said resulting polymer. This HCM serves as a chain propagator which initially furnishes OH groups as propagation sites. Subsequently, a second oxirane monomer, different from said first, is sequentially polymerized to yield a block copolymer. Branched block copolymers, or linear block copolymers of a HCM and (a) one or more glycidyl ethers, or (b) a haloalkyl epoxide and at least one glycidyl ether, may be prepared. Halogen containing segments of the block copolymers of the invention may be aminated to produce amphophilic polymers.

    Under particular conditions, a cationic ring-opening polymerization of an (single) oxirane monomer selected from the group consisting of an acyclic glycidyl ether, a cyclic glycidyl ether, and a haloalkyl epoxide, in the presence of a hydroxyl-terminated prepolymer ("HTP") and a particular catalyst, produces a polymerization having 'living polymerization' characteristics, provided that the OH groups are aliphatic OH groups and not aromatic OH groups. The result is an AB or ABA type block copolymer the molecular weight (mol wt) of which is directly proportional to the conversion of the monomerto the block copolymer. The HTP which may be a mono-, di-, tri-, or tetra-hydroxyl-terminated prepolymer, serves as a chain propagator which initially furnishes OH groups as propagation sites. Linear block copolymers or branched block copolymers are formed, depending upon the structure of the HTP. Where one segment of an AB or ABA type block contains halogen, the segment may be aminated. If the other segment is hydrophobic, the aminated block copolymer is amphiphilic.

    Configurations of cross-linked or vulcanized amphophilic or quaternized block copolymer of haloalkyl epoxides and hydroxyl terminated alkadiene polymers are useful as battery separators in both primary and secondary batteries, particularly nickel-zinc batteries. The quaternized block copolymers are prepared by polymerizing a haloalkyl epoxide in the presence of a hydroxyl terminated 1,3-alkadiene to form a block copolymer that is then reacted with an amine to form the quaternized or amphophilic block copolymer that is then cured or cross-linked with sulfur, polyamines, metal oxides, organic peroxides and the like.

    A cationic ring-opening polymerization of a cylic ether ("CE") in conjunction with an unsaturated alcohol (propagator) having an allyl double bond, produces a polyether macromer having an allylic group near one end and a hydroxyl group at the other. The polymerization proceeds by polyaddition of the CE to the OH group which is the propagating species. The CE is an alkylene oxide or an aliphatic or aromatic glycidyl ether; the propa­gator is a primary or secondary alcohol which, if cyclic may have a single internal double bond in one ring. The catalyst is a Friedel-Crafts acid, strong protic organic or inorganic acid, oxonium salt, or the like. The macromer formed may be homopolymerized to yield a poly­vinyl homomacromer with pendant chains of polymerized CE; or the CE may be copolymerized with a wide variety of olefinically unsaturated monomers to form a macromer copolymer; or, plural cyclic ethers may be (a) sequenti­ally polymerized to form macromer block copolyethers, or, (b) polymerized randomly to form macromer copoly­ether copolymers. The cationically ring-opened macromer formed always contains a trace of a cyclic oligomer of the CE.

Plural cyclic ethers may be (a) sequentially polymerized to form macromer block copolyethers, or, (b) polymerized randomly to form macromer copolyether co­polymers. The cationically ring-opened macromer formed always contains a trace of a cyclic oligomer of the CE. The macromer formed may be homopolymerized to yield a homopolymer of the macromer with pendant chains of poly­merized CE; or the macromer may be copolymerized with a wide variety of olefinically unsaturated monomers to form a copolymer of macromer.
