  • Photo-Fenton degradation of malachite green catalyzed by aromatic compounds under visible light irradiation

    The photo-Fenton degradation of malachite green (MG) catalyzed by aromatic derivatives under visible light irradiation was examined. Aromatic derivatives exhibit significant catalytic action in the photo-Fenton reaction. The degradation rates of MG with various kinds of aromatic derivatives obey the following order: hydroquinone > salicylic acid > quinone > carboxylic aromatic derivatives > amido aromatic derivatives. GC-MS detection of the products formed in the MG Fenton degradation in the presence of aromatic derivatives shows that the addition of the latter does not change the MG degradation pathways, although it greatly alters the reaction rate. The MG degradation mainly involves two different pathways: cleavage with a [MG–OH]˙ transition intermediate and N-demethylation.

    To provide a photoalignable material that can yield a photoalignable film having a high optical uniformity and no alignment defect, and is excellent in sensitivity to allow photoalignment even with exposure in a short period of time, and a liquid crystal alignment film having a high alignment stability of a liquid crystal compound from the photoalignable material. A photoalignable polymer composition containing a specific photoalignable polymer and a specific polymer that is reactive with the photoalignable polymer is manufactured, and the photoalignable film is manufactured by applying the polymer composition onto a base material or the like, drying the applied composition thereon, and irradiating the dried composition with light. Furthermore, the liquid crystal alignment film is manufactured by allowing alignment of molecules of the liquid crystal compound in the photoalignment film.

    Provided is a liquid crystal display element that can be baked at a low temperature when forming a liquid crystal alignment film capable of imparting an alignment regulating property and a pretilt angle developing property via a photoalignment method. Further provided is a liquid crystal display element in which the liquid crystal pretilt angles are highly stable, and display burn-in hardly occurs even due to long usage. Further provided are a vertical liquid crystal alignment film to be used in the liquid crystal display element, and a liquid crystal aligning agent with which it is possible to provide the vertical liquid crystal alignment film. A liquid crystal aligning agent of the present invention contains: component (A), which is a polymer including (A-1) a site having an isocyanate group and/or a blocked isocyanate group and (A-2) a site having photoreactivity; component (B), which is a compound having, in a molecule, at least two functional groups of at least one type selected from the group consisting of an amino group and a hydroxyl group; and an organic solvent.
