    A number of quadruply and triply bridged organodiantimony(V) compounds have been synthesized by reactions of [(SbR 2 BrO) 2 ] (R = Ph or p-tolyl) and [(SbR 3 X) 2 O] (R = Ph or p-tolyl, X = Br or Cl) with Na(O 2 AsMe 2 ), Na(O 2 AsPh 2 ) or Na(O 2 AsMe 2 ). The compounds have been characterised by a range of spectroscopic methods and crystal structures are reported for two quadruply bridged, [(SbPh 2 ) 2 (µ-O) 2 (µ -O 2 AsMe 2 ) 2 ] and [Sb(p-MeC 6 H 4 ) 2 } 2 (µ-O) 2 (µ-O 2 AsMe 2 ) 2 ], and four triply bridged compounds, [(SbPh 3 ) 2 (µ-O)(µ-O 2 PMe 2 ) 2 ], [(SbPh 3 ) 2 (µ-O)(µ-O 2 AsMe 2 ) 2 ], [(SbPh 3 ) 2 (µ-O)(µ-O 2 AsPh 2 ) 2 ] and [Sb(p-MeC 6 H 4 ) 3 } 2 (µ-O)(µ-O 2 PMe 2 ) 2 ]. Related trimethylantimony(V) compounds, i.e. [SbMe 3 (O 2 PMe 2 )} 2 O] and [SbMe 3 (O 2 AsPh 2 )} 2 O], which are highly moisture sensitive, have also been obtained.

    Treatment of diphenylantimony bromide oxide, (Ph2SbBrO)2, with silver oxalate leads to a novel ionic product, containing a planar twelve-membered cyclic antimony–oxygen dication in which two pairs of adjacent antimony atoms are further linked by hydroxy bridges to give Sb2O2 rings and a quadridentate oxalate is coordinated between the two remaining antimony atoms of the ring; the counter ions are two cis-dioxalatodiphenylantimony anions.

    Dimers containing a four-membered Sb2O2 ring with antimony atoms in distorted trigonal-bipyramidal co-ordination were obtained when either diphenylantimony(III) chloride or bromide, was oxidised with tert-butyl hydroperoxide; the crystal structure of [SbPh(2)O(Br)](2) has been determined. Related reactions with the corresponding fluoride and thiocyanate gave products with the same stoichiometry but X-ray crystallography showed these are centrosymmetric tetramers, X(2)Ph(2)SbO(Ph(2)SbO(2)SbPh(2))OSbPh(2)X(2), which also contain a central four-membered ring. A possible mechanism for formation of these. tetramers is presented. Oxidation of phenylantimony dichloride and dibromide on the other hand gave only rearrangement and decomposition products.
